Changanacherry is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Kerala, the land of serene backwaters, palm-lined beaches, and lush green hills. Our town is blessed with a natural bounty of landscapes, including the Pamba River, which flows through our town, and the Vembanad Lake, which is the largest lake in Kerala. The town has a fascinating history that dates back centuries. Geologists have discovered remnants of old ships and cattamarans in Changanacherry, which suggests that the town was once submerged under water.
The inscriptions at Perunnai Temple indicate that the area now known as Perunnai was once called ‘Perunnaithal’ and was an extensive sea-shore before the 10th century. The town was known by different names before the name ‘Changanacherry’ was recorded in history in the 15th century. Some historians believe that the name ‘Changanacherry’ is derived from ‘Changa’=water and ‘Cherry’=near the sea, while others believe that it comes from ‘Sanganattusserry’, the name given to the town when Buddhists fleeing Magadha arrived in the area during the reign of the Pushyamithra Saga dynasty in B.C. 184.Changanacherry’s rich history, cultural heritage, and communal harmony make it a unique and special place, attracting visitors from all over the world.

Vembanad Lake is the longest lake in India and the largest lake in Kerala. The Vembanad Lake, also known as Vembanadu Lake, is a large body of water located in Kerala that stretches across multiple districts, including Kottayam, Alleppey (Alappuzha), and Kochi (Ernakulam).
The stone lamp post embodies the excellence of the Kerala school of architecture, and was placed in this location by the famed freedom fighter Veluthampi Dalawa. The Lamp post which is still illuminated by kerosene-fueled five lamps, is a popular attraction that draws visitors from all over the world.
The Laxmipuram Palace is situated in the Changanacherry taluk of Kottayam district, which is located in the southwestern region of the Indian state of Kerala. This palace used to serve as the residence for the royal family of Koyi Thampurans. The palace was known for attracting numerous skilled artists, including renowned writers, notable Malayalam singers, and classical musicians, who were all patrons of the royal family.
The temple houses a 6-feet-tall idol of Lord Subramanya, also known as Lord Muruga. It was built in the year 753 AD. Interestingly, this temple was the first in Kerala to be open to all Hindus, regardless of caste, thanks to an order by Sri Chithira Thirunal Maharaja of Travancore. The temple celebrates an annual festival called the "Pallivetta Utsav," in the month of December/January.
Thrickodithanam Mahavishnu Temple was built around the 7th century CE, which is dedicated to the five Pandavas from the epic Mahabharata, is located in the town of Changanacherry. This temple is renowned for its elaborate stone carvings, wall inscriptions, mural paintings, and including the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu known as the Dasavatharams.
